verb - Bootlegging is the present tense participle of "bootleg". In open water terms, it is the act of participating in an organized open water event that collects registration fees, without paying. Bootlegging involves one or more of the following:
1) Swimming the entire course from start to finish without registering.
2) Joining the swimmers shortly after the starting line through the rest of the course.
3) Aborting the swim near the finish line to decrease the likelihood of getting caught.
Example: That swimmer didn't register for the swim, because he didn't care about the shirt or medal, and ended up bootlegging the race.
