The aQuellé Midmar Mile in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa, organized by Wayne Riddin, is the world's largest competitive open water swim that attracts nearly 19,000 swimmers of all ages and abilities every year to South Africa. Its operations are among the most professional in the sport and its budget is the largest in the world. It is one of the World's Top 100 Open Water Swims and includes a series of seeding events and is part of the 2014-2015 World Open Water Swimming Series.

The Midmar Mile was recognized as an Honour Organisation by the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame in its Class of 2013 for its outstanding contributors to the sport of Open Water Swimming/Marathon Swimming. Its race director, Wayne Riddin, has been nominated for the World Open Water Swimming Man of the Year.

Pope-Ellis Ironman / Ironwoman

The aQuellé Midmar Mile in Pietermaritzburg Comrades Marathon is one leg of the Pope-Ellis Ironman and Pope-Ellis Ironwoman competition which also includes 89.9 km Comrades Marathon and the 120 km Dusi Canoe Marathon.

8-Mile Charity Club

Individuals who wish to raise money for selected charities also participate in the 8-mile Club where they swim all 8 one-mile heats at the Midmar Mile. Olympian Terence Parkin once not only swam all 8 one-mile heats, but also swam back to the start from the finish to complete a 16-mile charity swim.
